Lost In Paradise

SCENE 1

Back room of the store, 2 years ago

(Paul and Stan are standing next to a computer. Paul is talking and simultaneously typing something into the computer.)

PAUL

“Well… that’s when she reached down and I swear I screamed like a little girl as she picked it up.”

STAN

“You are a girl.”

(Paul looks at Stan with a look of contempt… and then away and shakes his head.)

PAUL

“Ok… you got me there… but it was huge. “

STAN

“It was a garden snake.”

(Paul stops at a page on the computer and speaks.)

PAUL

Well, there is that.”

(Paul looks at the computer screen.)

STAN

“What’s the damage?”

PAUL

“Looks like my department was down two percent… and…”

(Paul presses the down key on the computer a few times stopping when he finds the page he is looking for.)

PAUL

“… your department was up three.”

STAN

“That’s four days in a row. You owe me lunch.”

(At this point a young blond haired girl walks by and places her hand on Stan’s back as she passes.)

KRISSY

“Morning.”

STAN

“Good morning.”

(Paul looks up halfheartedly to look at her.)

PAUL

“Morning.”

(Krissy continues on her way. Paul looks back up at her and stares at her as she walks away… He continues to stare as he asks his question.)

PAUL

“Who is that?”

STAN

“Uh… I believe her name is Krissy. She works on third shift.”

(Paul watches her walk around a corner… and then regains his composure… then turns back to his computer.)

PAUL

“She’s cute… you should ask her out.”

STAN

“Maybe you should ask her out.”

PAUL

“I have a girlfriend.”

STAN

“Your girlfriend is a slut.”

(Paul looks up with shock.)

PAUL

“What.”

STAN

“Trust me… she’s a slut.”

PAUL

“She is not. I know she has a bit of a reputation… but… it‘s all in the past.”

STAN

“In the past? She’s slept with five people since she’s been here.”

PAUL

“And? I just happen to be the last of those five.”

STAN

“Six… six people… and she‘s only been here two months.”

PAUL

“So she wasn’t committed before… now she has me. She loves me.”

STAN

“Uh huh… and what are you going to do when she breaks up with you?

PAUL

“Cry.”

STAN

“Uh huh.”

PAUL

“I hate you…I don’t know why I even call you my friend.”

STAN

“We both like the strip club.”

PAUL

“Well there is that.”

STAN

“You know you still owe me lunch.”

PAUL

“Hmmm… we could always go best of five.”

STAN

“You’ll still lose and I’ll still be getting a free meal.”

PAUL

“Uh huh.”

SCENE2

Psychiatrist office

(Paul sits on a couch in the doctor’s office.)

PAUL

“I wish I could see her eyes again… so blue… so beautiful… so…” (Paul lowers his head and sighs.) “Those beautiful eyes… I spent a life time in those eyes. I saw the day we met… I saw our children… our grandchildren. I saw us young and I saw us old. In her eyes I never saw the end. I guess I should have looked away from her eyes long enough to see what was in her heart.”

(Paul shifts in his seat…)

PAUL

“I guess you want me to start with the beginning of the day… Well, I woke up that evening… I can tell you… that was never my intention… Nope. Actually I was hoping that God would take pity on me and let me pass in my sleep.  I swear… he never listens.

I stayed in bed for what seems like an eternity… maybe it was ten minutes. Who knows? All I knew was when I got out of that bed I would be spending my thirteenth night without her… Thirteen days… nearly two weeks… a lifetime… an eternity.

I got out of bed and I couldn’t keep the pain of her absence from showing… God knows I tried… but even as I showered all I could do was picture her. ”

(Scene changes to random rooms at Paul’s house as Paul speaks)

(Paul is lying in bed staring up at the ceiling. The alarm clock goes off and the song Walking On Sunshine comes on. Paul sighs and places his hand on the off button. He gets out of the bed and heads to the bathroom. The scene moves forward to find Paul standing in the shower with his head under the water when the curtain pulls back to reveal Krissy standing there with nothing on but a towel and a smile…

KRISSY

“Mind if I join you?”

(She smiles almost innocently as she looks up at him. Paul closes his eyes and then reopens them… she is gone and the shower curtain is closed.)

PAUL

“It seemed that everywhere I went she was there.”

(Walking out of the bathroom into his bedroom where Krissy is laying on the bed reading a book. She looks up…)

KRISSY

“Hey, baby.”

(Paul turns his head away slightly turning his head down as he turn… only to come face to face to Krissy.)

PAUL

“Everywhere I turned I found myself staring directly into those deep blue eyes… those beautiful blue eyes.”

(Paul stares into her eyes… then reaches his hand up to place it on her cheek. As he does she disappears.)

PAUL

“And even though it felt like she was there, she wasn’t … but the pain was. Another thing I asked God to dispatch of… (sigh)… he never listens.”

SCENE3

Parking lot of shopping center

(Paul sits in his car staring out the windshield, his eyes glassy when someone beats on his door window. Startled he looks over to see Stan looking back… Paul opens the door, but continues to sit.)

STAN

“You ok, Paul?”

PAUL

“Yeah… why wouldn’t I be?”

STAN

“Yeah… well, you know… I’m just checking. It’s been a tough couple of weeks for you.”

PAUL

“It’s been a tough year.”

STAN

“Yeah… it has. Well… are you coming in or are you gonna stay out here? I mean we could bring your freight out here, but I don’t think that would work well for the company… hard to keep the cold shit cold out here.”

(Paul rubs his eyes.)

PAUL

“No… I’m coming.”

(Paul gets out of his car and starts to follow Stan, who heads for the entrance of the store.)

STAN

“So, how is your grandmother?”

PAUL

“Not so good… but for the situation, ok. I guess.”

STAN

“How was the trip out there?”

PAUL

“Twenty eight hours driving out and twenty eight hours back… it probably wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for… (Paul trails off)  Needless to say with that going on I wasn’t much help to my mother.”

STAN

“But that’s understandable.”

(They walk into the store. The door greeter greets the two young men.)

MARY BETTH

“Good morning!”

STAN

“It’s ten p.m.. You’re a little early.”

MARY BETH

“For most of the people here right now… maybe, but for us it’s morning.”

PAUL

“She’s got you there… Good morning, Mary Beth.”

MAY BETH

“How was your trip?”

PAUL

“Long.”

MARY BETH

“And how is Krissy?”

(Paul looks down in shame.)

PAUL

“I wish I knew.”

(Mary Beth begins to say something but with a glance to Stan, who is shaking his head, decides not to.)

MARY BETH

“Well, it’s good to have you back.”

PAUL

“Thanks”

(The guys begin to walk again… Paul continues to speak to Stan.)

PAUL

“It’s not understandable… I went with my mother to help her through a rough time. I failed miserably. All I did was spend my time worrying about my situation. All I could do was think about Krissy.”

STAN

“Yeah… I wish I knew what to say, Paul, but I’m the last person you want to give advice. I never really liked her anyways.”

(They go through the back doors and enter the back hallway heading for the break room.)

PAUL

“That’s not exactly true.”

STAN

“Yeah… but that was before I got to know her.”

(They enter the break room where there are several people sitting around chatting… The manager… Julia, who is sitting at the end of the table closest to the door, looks up and sees the two coming through the door.)

JULIA

“There they are.” (Looking at Paul)  “ Welcome back.”

PAUL

“Thanks.”

(Paul and Stan sit down  at the table where Julia was sitting.)

JULIA

“So, how was your trip?”

PAUL

“Long.”

JULIA

“Yes it is… you all drove?”

PAUL

“Minus eating and restroom breaks… twenty eight hours one way… and unfortunately we came back.”

JULIA

“Aw… now don’t be like that. We would miss you if you wouldn’t have come back.”

PAUL

“At least someone would have.”

JULIA

“I take it that it didn’t go good with you know who.”

STAN

“That’s the understatement of the year.”

PAUL

“It didn’t end that bad… I guess… It just ended.”

JULIA

“Well, I’m sorry to hear that.”

PAUL

“Yeah… me too.”

(Julia shakes her head in the affirmative and then stands up to get everyone’s attention.)

JULIA

“Ok… the general merchandise truck is around three thousand pieces…” (She looks down at Stan.) “.. So, it’s gonna be a busy night. Groceries has about six hundred… so, it should go smoothly in your area… Which means that when you finish you go help in other areas… and I don’t want to hear any complaints.  You have a full crew… Frozen and dairy have eleven hundred pieces and the meat truck has already arrived.”

PAUL

“Good... that’s one less thing we’ll have to take care of.”

JULIA

“Also we have a new person in health and beauty aids… everyone this is Cindy.” (Julia points to the young girl sitting against the wall.) “Let’s try to help her as much as we can. Any questions? (No one speaks up.) Ok… let’s get at it.”

(The whole group gets up and begins to head out the door… Julia grabs Paul’s shoulder and holds him back until everyone else had left.)

JULIA

“Listen… I’m sorry to hear about you and Krissy, Paul. I heard a little from Stan. I don’t know why she did you that way… You’re a good guy. You didn’t deserve it. I was hoping you guys could work it out… sometimes it just doesn’t though, Paul. If you need to talk… I’m here.”

(Paul starts to tear up.)

PAUL

“I just don’t understand… what’s wrong with me? What did he have that I didn’t?”

JULIA

“There is nothing wrong with you.”

PAUL

“That’s what she said, Julia… I just… I don’t understand… the way she used to look at me. How can anyone look a person that way… and… and then just leave…” (Paul leans against the door and places his head in his hands.) “I just wish you could have seen the way she looked at me.”

JULIA

“I did see the way she looked at you… and I saw the way you looked at her too. I saw you both fall in love… but you fell so much harder than she did, Paul.”

PAUL

“Apparently.”

JULIA

“You’re a good guy, Paul. You were there for her at a really hard time in her life.”

(Paul looks back at Julia again.)

PAUL

“Yeah… how come he got five years with her and I only got two months? He treated her like shit and I did everything for her. I fought for two years to get her away from him… two years… wasted.”

JULIA

“You’re wrong… You didn’t waste two years. You did a real good thing for her, Paul. You and I both know she would have wound up really hurt or worse if she would have stayed with him any longer… and I don’t know… maybe by showing her that there was something better out there you opened her eyes to a whole new world. She was dying and you made her live again. You know she told me that one day. You made her live again. You should be proud of that.”

PAUL

“Yeah… but why couldn’t it have been me she wanted to live with?”

(Julia looks at Paul… she sees his hurt and realizes that at least for the time being her words were falling on deaf ears.)

JULIA

“Well… I’m here if you need me, Paul. Why don’t we get to work? Maybe the work will take your mind off her and everything else for a while.”

PAUL

“Yeah… I’m sure I have a lot of work left for me from last week on top of tonight’s truck.”

(Paul walks out the door and Julia stands there for a moment and watches as Paul walks away, she shakes her head and sighs.)

SCENE 4

(Paul sitting on the couch at the psychiatrist’s office.)

PAUL

“What do I think death will be like? I don’t know… but I know what dying feels like… because I did that. Did you know that? That’s right I died.. And it felt like someone shut the door on my life… they just shut the door.”
SCENE 5

Back hallway towards the back freezer

(Paul walks down the back hall of the store slowly. He watches other people attempting to do their jobs quickly… or at least attempting to look like they are doing their job quickly.

He comes to the freezer door and opens it only to find pallets of freight staring him in the face… he sighs out loud and maneuvers himself into the freezer as best he can.

Standing in the largest empty spot he can find, he shivers slightly and then closes his eyes and places his hand over his face.

He pulls his hand away from his face and looks back towards the freezer door. There stands Krissy smiling.)

KRISSY

“Hey, baby. I thought I might just brave the cold for a little kiss.”

(She walks towards him with her arms reaching out for him and then she disappears… As she disappears , Paul realizes that even though he knew she wasn’t there he reached out for her too… and he lowers his arms again.

He leans against a pallet and starts to cry.)

PAUL

“God, help me.”

(Through the doorway of the freezer comes the dairy lady, Sandy.)

SANDY

“Whoa… it ain’t that bad, is it?”

(Paul turns quickly away from her and rubs at his eyes.)

SANDY

“Yep, yep, yep… We tried to get over here as much as we could, but… well, you know.”

(Paul, more composed, turns back towards her.)

PAUL

“Oh, no worries. I wasn’t  expecting you all to have time to do much.”

SANDY

“Well, if they would get us more help like we keep screaming for,  maybe we wouldn’t have this problem.” (She waves her hands at the pallets.)  “So… how was your trip?”

PAUL

“Long.”

SANDY

“Did you have a good time?”

(Paul slightly turns away again and wipes his eyes once more.)

PAUL

“It had its moments.”

SANDY

“Did you go to Vegas this time?”

PAUL

“No… not this time. Grandma isn’t well enough to make that trip anymore. We took her to the Indian reservations to gamble a little. I think she had a good time.”

SANDY

“Did you win?”

PAUL

“No… I don’t ever seem to win.”

(Paul starts to move some boxes around.)

SANDY

“Yeah, well… that’s the way it goes… Have you seen Krissy since you got back?”

(He stops moving the boxes.)

PAUL

“No.”

(Sandy looks him over a second and decides to leave it at that.)

SANDY

“Well, ok… I guess I better get back to my job or something. They might fire me if I don’t.. HA!!!”

(Paul leans up against a pallet again.)

PAUL

“Oh, Krissy… why don’t you love me?”
SCENE 6

Health and Beauty Aids

(Stan and Cindy walk to and stop at H.B.A.)

STAN

“Ok, they showed you on first shift what you would be doing over here when you were training, right?”

CINDY

“Yes, sir”

STAN

“Oh no… don’t call me sir. You don’t work for me. We all work together.”

(Stan looks around at the freight in baskets and on pallets.)

STAN

“Although that’s forgotten sometimes…. Now you’re going to see a lot of freight over here. Don’t let that intimidate you, ok? You just work as best you can. Tonight was a huge truck and no one expects miracles from you.”

CINDY

“Ok.”

(Cindy smiles at Stan and Stan blushes.)

STAN

“ So… generally we take a break after two hours, a lunch after another two hours and another break two hours after that. It keeps it well separated and a lot less complicated. You can join us in the break room or go outside with the smokers… whatever you want. It’s up to you. Just make sure you take your breaks. They are yours and you never let anyone take what’s yours… especially this company.”

(Cindy looks at Stan a bit perplexed.)

CINDY

“Ok.”

STAN

“Sorry… too many years with the company will make you a bit… less forgiving.”

CINDY

“You sound like someone who has been screwed one too many times.”

STAN

“Yeah… I guess I have. Sorry… not exactly the way to act around someone we’re trying to keep, huh?”

CINDY

“Don’t worry about it.”

STAN

“So… umm… if you have any problems or questions just ask. I’m usually around somewhere, but if I’m not ask Julia or Paul… They’re good people to ask. Anyone else is ok, but if you want a guaranteed  truthful answer… they’ll help.”

CINDY

“I’ve met Julia, but who is Paul?”

STAN

“Oh… he’s the guy who came in with me tonight. He works in the freezers, but he’s been here a long time and knows his stuff.”

CINDY

“Ok… thank you… Stan?”

STAN

“Yep… Stan… Just remember that name and everything will be great.”

CINDY

“I’m sure it will, Stan.”

(Cindy giggles and Stan blushes again.)

STAN

“Ok… well, I’ll be back in a bit to check up on you. I guess you can just get at it as best you can.”

CINDY

“Ok… and thanks again.”

(Stan walks away towards the  frozen food department looking back over his shoulder to see Cindy smiling at him. He smiles back and continues on his way.)
SCENE 7

Frozen food dept.

(Paul stands on aisle two, staring into one of the doors, grumbling.)

PAUL

“What the hell? I’m gone a little over a week and everything is just tossed in the damn doors.”

(Stan comes around the corner glancing back over his shoulder towards HBA once and then walks up to Paul. Paul waves his hands frantically towards the doors he’s standing next too.)

PAUL

“Look at this… ughhh… it’s like they put a bunch of illiterate morons over here while I was gone. There’s shit stuffed everywhere.

(Paul opens a door and grabs a package.)

PAUL

“This belongs three doors down… and if you look that spot is empty. They put the whole damn case in the wrong spot. It’s like they don’t care.”

STAN

“They don’t.”

PAUL

“I know… no one cares about anything anymore.”

(Stan puts his hand on Paul’s shoulder.)

STAN

“It’ll be ok, Paul.”

(Paul sighs.)

PAUL

“Yeah… if you say so.”

(Stan looks around the department and then back at Paul.)

STAN

“Look… how many times have you told me not to let this place get to me? Take your own advice, huh?”

PAUL

“It’s all I have left, Stan… It’s all she left me.”

(Paul reaches for a leather string around his neck and pulls it from under his shirt. On the end of the string is a small ring.  He holds the ring in his fingers.)

PAUL

“… other than this. I’ve worn this since the day she gave it to me… and even though I know it’s over…”

(Paul slumps over a bit as he continues.)

PAUL

“I can’t seem to let go.”

STAN

“It’s only been a week. No one is asking you to let go yet.”

PAUL

“She did.”

STAN

“Look, Paul… you’re gonna have to try to move on. I know it’s hard, but… you’re only gonna make things worse on yourself if you dwell on it.”

PAUL

“It can’t get worse… I couldn’t bear it if it did.”

(Around the corner comes a small  young woman. When Stan sees her he calls out to her.)

STAN

“Hey, Gnome.”

(Paul also acknowledges her presence.)

PAUL

“Hey, Gnome.”

GNOME

“Boys… Paul, from the look of you I would say your vacation was long and totally unrestful.”

PAUL

“Yeah it was.. It didn’t help that Kri…”

GNOME

“Oh, no you don’t. You are not going to whine to me about that little bitch. I warned you to stay away from her.”

PAUL

“Please… don’t call her a bitch. Besides… you told me you didn’t like her. You never…”

GNOME

“Exactly. Me telling you that I didn’t like her should have been your first and most important clue to stay away from her… God, men never listen… and you’re just a boy, so there’s no hope for you. And no chance that you would’ve listened to such sage advice from such a seasoned woman such as me.”

PAUL

“You’re like six years younger than us.”

GNOME

“Oh, but so much more traveled.”

STAN

“In so many ways.”

GNOME

“Did you just call me a whore?”

STAN

“No… I wouldn’t dare insult such a well seasoned woman as yourself… so well-traveled and all.”

GNOME

“Keep it up, Stan… I may have slept around in my time, but I was smart enough to stop before I got to you two pathetic little boys.”

(Stan acts like she stabbed him in the heart.)

STAN

“Eww… your words hurt, Gnome.”

(Gnome hits Stan in the arm and then directs her attention back to Paul.)

GNOME

“Now forget about all this idiotic bull over that bitch.”

PAUL

“Please, do you mind not calling her that?”

GNOME

“If the proverbial shoe fits… anyways, ask me about the baby.”

PAUL

“How’s the baby, Gnome?”

GNOME

“He is absolutely wonderful. Thanks for asking.”

STAN

“And he’s a chunk too… Three months old and already as big as some one year olds.”

PAUL

“He’s a big boy.”

GNOME

“That’s my boy… He’s gonna be huge, playing  professional football and bring momma lots and lots of money.”

PAUL

“Looking ahead are we?”

GNOME

“Are you kidding? I’ve practically spent his first million. Speaking of which… I’ll be coming back in two weeks.”

PAUL

“Why would you want to come back here?”

GNOME

“Those millions that I’m spending… well, I at least have to make some down payments on them until Baby Gnome can break into the big time.”

PAUL

“Understandable.”

(Gnome grabs Stan by the arm and starts to lead him away from Paul and the freezers.)

GNOME

“Well, bye Paul… come on Stan. Walk with me while I shop.”

STAN

“ I have to get to work… we have a three thousand piece truck and we’re shorthanded on the GM side.”

GNOME

“What else is new?”

(Gnome and Stan walk around the corner leaving Paul alone.)
SCENE 8

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sits on the couch talking to the doctor.)

PAUL

“You know… there is a point in your life when you know your childhood dreams aren’t going to come true. You just decide that the time has come to give up on them. At that point you grab a hold of the first good thing that comes along… in my case it was love… and I grabbed a hold with all my heart… I grabbed a hold and closed my eyes to everything else… That’s what everyone does… right? They grab a hold of the one thing that can replace their dreams… right? Dreams don’t come true anyways. Of course it was a damn good replacement for my dreams. Hell… it made me forget all about them. It made me forget everything but the happiness I felt.”
SCENE 9

H.B.A.

(Cindy, trying to put deodorant on the shelf as Tommy, one of the floor crew guys, leans on a broom and talks to her.)

TOMMY

“… so she leaves this jerk for him. I mean, Paul’s nothing special, but compared to that guy Paul’s a saint. Actually he’s too good for his own good. Hell, when he first started working on third he just broke up with this girl… she was married… man, that was a huge ordeal. When he came to third he was a wreck.”

CINDY

“Mhm… why are you telling me all of this?’

TOMMY

“Uh… well, I just thought you would want to know why Paul is looking over here all the time.”

(They both look at Paul in the frozen food dept. Paul was looking towards them but was totally oblivious to their stares.)

CINDY

“Poor guy.”

TOMMY

“Yeah… well, I think he was just really stupid to think she would stay with him once she left to go home. It lasted longer than I thought it would though.”

(Cindy still watches Paul as he begins to work again.)

CINDY

“Yeah, well… love is blind.”

TOMMY

“I don’t believe in it myself.”

CINDY

“What? Love?”

TOMMY

“Yep… I’m married.”

CINDY

“Oh… sorry.”

TOMMY

“Oh, it’s no big deal. It’s a good arrangement. She feeds me and I bring money home to her. She likes money. I like food. Perfect.”

CINDY

“It doesn’t sound all that perfect. Where is the romance? Where is the friendship? Where is the sex?”

TOMMY

“We’ve been married for thirty two years… besides… sex doesn’t have anything to do with love.”

CINDY

“It sounds like you have an answer for everything.”

TOMMY

“No… I really don’t. I know what goes on around here because I move around throughout  the store. I know how my life is going… at least for the moment… but I don’t have the answer to everything. If I did maybe I could’ve stopped Krissy from leaving Paul… or at least kept Paul from falling for her in the first place.”

CINDY

“I thought you said you knew it wouldn’t last.”

TOMMY

“I did… but that doesn’t mean I thought it was right. Paul is a good guy. Krissy is a great girl who just happened to have gone through some rough times. They would have made a great couple, but life doesn’t always go the way we think it should…just look at Paul over there and you can see that.”

CINDY

“You know… I think you believe in love a whole lot more than you’d like to admit.”

TOMMY

“Don’t mistake knowledge for emotion.”

CINDY

“Right.”

(Tommy starts to say something else when Julia walks up behind him.)

JULIA

“You hindering her work, Tommy?”

TOMMY

“Oh, hey, Julia. Nope… just giving the new girl a bit of a heads up on the place.”

JULIA

“Right… well, I think the rest of the store could use your emotionless knowledge too.”

TOMMY

“You heard that?”

JULIA

“I heard enough of it. Move on. You know how big daddy gets if the floors aren’t done.”

TOMMY

“I’m on it, boss lady.”

(Tommy moves away and Julia moves closer to Cindy.)

JULIA

“So, how is it going over here?”

CINDY

“Good… I guess. I’m still having troubles finding where things go.”

JULIA

“It takes time. No one expects you to have the job down pat in one night.”

CINDY

“I hope that guy isn’t in trouble for talking with me.”

JULIA

“Tommy? No… he’s not in trouble. He’s just making his rounds. Tommy has to talk to everyone once and make sure his gossip is the freshest in the store... And a second time to spread what he‘s learned.”

CINDY

“He was telling me about Paul and ummm…”

JULIA

“Krissy. Yeah… that’s the newest gossip.” (She sighs) “You’ll learn that this store is like a small community, Cindy. There are always affairs, fights, power struggles. We thrive on them. They don’t make for a great work environment but you can’t stop them.”

(Julia looks toward Paul and watches him work… even at a distance she can see his tears.)

CINDY

“It sounds like a truly sad story.”

JULUIA

“With the way Paul feels for her… it was a long time coming.”

CINDY

“What do you mean.”

JULIA

“Oh, you could tell he loved her for a long time… I think he loved her even before he knew it… You could see it in the way he looked at her. He tried to keep it from both himself and her for two years. I could see it though. Every time he saw her with her exboyfriend… he kept quiet for so long… but it was killing him.”

(Julia looks back at Cindy with the realization that she was telling more than she needed too.)

JULIA

“Now look at me… I’m hindering your work.”

CINDY

“Let me get back to it.”

JULIA

“Ok… I have  a ton of work to do myself. If you need anything…”

CINDY

“Yeah… Stan told me to come to you, Paul or him.”

JULIA

“That’s right. We’re all here for you if you need us.”

CINDY

“Thank you.”

(Julia walks away, glancing toward frozen food once more before leaving. Cindy looks once more too and then starts working again.)
SCENE 10

Frozen food dept.

(Paul wipes a tear away and loads a few boxes on to his cart. He looks at his watch and then walks over to the nearest phone, which happened to be hanging on a pillar in women’s clothing. He picks up the receiver and on the base pushes the page button.)

PAUL on the intercom

“Stan dial one-two-six. Stan dial one-two-six.”

(Paul hangs up the phone and waits for a moment until the phone rings. He picks up the receiver.)

PAUL

“Hey… it’s break time… yeah, I’ll meet you in the break room.”

( He hangs up the phone and walks to the backroom leaving his freight sitting where it was. He walks toward where Julia was working and hollers to her…)

PAUL

“Julia!”

(Julia peaks out from an aisle.)

JULIA

“Yo!”

PAUL

“Break.”

JULIA

“On my way.”

(Paul heads to the break room.)
SCENE 11

Break room

(The small group consisting of Julia, Paul, Tommy, Cindy, and Stan get things from the vending machine and then they all convene at the table.)

CINDY

“Thanks for calling me for break, Stan.”

STAN

“Umm… no problem.”

JULIA

“Paul… I almost forgot… this is Cindy. You two didn’t really have a chance to meet at the meeting.”

PAUL

“Hi.”

CINDY

“Hi.”

(The room is silent for a few seemingly uncomfortable moments until Paul breaks it.)

PAUL

“Alright… I know it’s all you guys have to talk about. Go ahead and ask me whatever you want. It’s not like it’s gonna hurt any worse.”

JULIA

“No… Paul, we don’t need to know anything.”

TOMMY

“We’ve all been there, man. You fell in love and it didn’t work out. It happens.”

JULIA

“You’ll get over it. I know it doesn’t seem like it right now, but one day you’ll find someone new. You’re a good guy, Paul.”

(Paul slams his hand down on the table.)

PAUL

“Damn it! I’m not a good guy!”

(Paul lays his head on the table.)

PAUL

“I’m just a guy… and I don’t want anyone new.”

(Julia lays her hand on his shoulder to attempt to comfort him, but he just shrugs away. Then he sits back up with red, tear filled eyes.)

PAUL

“Screw this… I’ve got work.”

(Paul gets up and heads for the door. Julia gets up to follow, but Stan stops her and follows instead… Paul stops halfway down the hall and leans against the wall. Stan walks up next to him.)

STAN

“Paul… are you going to be ok?”

(Paul turns to Stan with tears in his eyes.)

PAUL

“No. I’m not going to be ok. Everything’s going to hell and all I hear is how good a guy I am.”

STAN

“That’s because you are. You’re a good guy, Paul… and there is nothing wrong with that.”

PAUL

“I’m not a good guy, Stan… I’m just a guy… I tried telling her that, but she wouldn’t listen.”

STAN

“Look, Julia was just trying…”

PAUL

“Not Julia… Krissy. I tried to tell her, but she kept telling me that I was a good guy and that it wasn’t my fault that we weren’t together. I don’t get it, Stan. If I’m so good… why am I not good enough? Huh? What’s so wrong with me?”

STAN

“I don’t know what to tell you, Paul. Any advice I give would be useless to you. It‘s been so long since I‘ve been in a relationship… and even then they never lasted very long… the longest relationship with a woman I‘ve had has been with my mother. Sometimes I think about my twenty seven years living with my mother and how close we‘ve become… I‘m feeling a bit like Norman Bates. A boy‘s best friend is his mother, you know?”

(Paul leans back against the wall and wipes the tear that falls from his eye and then kind of chuckles once.)

PAUL

“You know…if they made a movie about my life… I wouldn’t even be the hero… I would be the comic relief.”

STAN

“Yeah, well… all I know is your treating this like it’s a Greek tragedy… the thing is your not Greek and though Krissy leaving you has been bad… it’s been anything but a tragedy.”

PAUL

“Hasn’t it been?”

SCENE 12

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sits on the couch speaking to the doctor.)

PAUL

“You know… I was looking for something in my life that would last. I never find that… one thing that I can keep from slipping through my hands.” (He sighs) “ She felt so good in my hands… in my arms. I could have held her forever… You know she told me I could too… hold on to her forever. I guess forever isn’t as long as we thought it was.”
SCENE 13

Frozen food

(Paul stands next to an open freezer door looking towards health and beauty aids across the store. Staring back at him is Krissy. She smiles at him and he smiles back. Paul reaches over to the freezer door and draws a large heart in the frost that covers the inside of the door. Krissy covers her mouth and blushes… Paul’s smile fades as Krissy disappears leaving him standing next to the still open door, but the heart that he had drawn on the door disappears as well… I know what your saying, reader. God that‘s a jumbled up mess of info… who cares as long as you get what I‘m trying to say. Anyways… Julia comes around the corner prompting Paul to turn and shut the freezer door and begin breaking a box that he picked up from the floor.)

JULIA

“Paul… I’m sorry if I said something wrong. We all care about you. We hate to see you like this. I… hate to see you like this. You’re too upbeat a guy to be this down.”

PAUL

“Am I? Am I that goofy guy who makes people laugh… or is that just a mask I wear?”

JULIA

“I can’t believe that’s just a mask. You’re too good…”

PAUL

“Too good a guy? Being good doesn’t make you happy, Julia. In fact being the good guy is miserable. It means you’re the first person to get screwed because you’re the easiest. Being good… being too good means that you have to be understanding, caring, loving, supporting… but by God you can’t be upset when life doesn’t go your way. You have to be happy for other people’s happiness even if it means that you’re going to be alone and miserable for the rest of your life.”

JULIA

“No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t mean any of those things. Sure… maybe you do get hurt easier, maybe not… but everyone gets hurt. You’ve got to learn that. You have a big heart, Paul. I could see that when you were with Krissy… Hell, I could see that even before that. I don’t know why she did this… that’s between the two of you, but she’s gone. It’s tough, but it’ll get better.”

PAUL

“I’ve heard this all before… time and time again. Don’t worry, Julia. I’ll throw on my little mask whenever you’re around.”

(Paul puts a half-assed smile on his face.)

PAUL

“See… this is for you, Julia. I’ll keep it on and you’ll never hear another ill word from my mouth… Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some happy little freight that needs put in my happy little doors before it melts into happy little piles of vomit.”

JULIA

“Paul…”

(Julia sighs as Paul ignores her and continues to do his work… and so she turns away leaving Paul alone to his work… Time passes and the freight on Paul’s pallet slowly disappears as he works it. Tommy soon comes through with the floor buffing machine . He shuts the machine off a little farther up the aisle and walks back to Paul.)

TOMMY

“Hey, man. How’s it going?”

(Paul looks a Tommy and puts on a big smile.)

TOMMY

“Yeah… you don’t have to smile around me… So, I heard all about the thing with

Julia. She’s just trying to help, you know?”

(Paul stops his work long enough to give Tommy a look and then he continues, trying to ignore Tommy.)

TOMMY

“Yep… you know I told her not to go out with you in the first place? I told her if she did decided to she should definitely not sleep with you… you know… ‘I know where he’s  been‘, I told her. That last girlfriend of his… whoa!”

(Paul looks at Tommy shocked.)

PAUL

“What the hell?”

TOMMY

“What? You didn’t want to hear all the sympathetic and helpful things people were saying. I figured you needed a little dose of truth. Hurts like hell… doesn’t it?”

PAUL

“You told her not to go out with me because of my ex?”

TOMMY

“Yep.”

PAUL

“What the hell, Tommy?”

TOMMY

“You and I both know how broken hearted you were when she left you. Hell, you should’ve known she wouldn’t leave her husband for some low paid stock boy… and I just knew that Krissy wouldn’t leave that asshole for you. Of course she didn’t listen to me and I was wrong about her leaving him. She did it… and apparently you had that certain something to prove me wrong.”

PAUL

“Yeah… but she didn’t stay with me.”

TOMMY

“You showed her there was the possibility of a happy life after living in hell for so long. You showed her freedom. You did good for her.”

PAUL

“Yeah… I loved her so much, Tommy. If I did so good… why didn’t she stay with me. Why wasn’t I good enough to keep her?”

TOMMY

“I don’t know, kid. Maybe one day she’ll come back to you. Who knows… maybe she’ll see how good she had it.”

PAUL

“She won’t… I screwed up, Tommy. I screwed up all chances of ever getting back together with her. I acted a fool, begging for her to take me back. I cried like a baby in front of her… I was a fool, Tommy. I am a fool. There’s just no reason to believe it’ll get better. We were only together for a short time… but she became my whole life. I really don’t know what to do without her.”

TOMMY

“You move on.”

(Tommy walks back over to the buffing machine and starts it up.)

TOMMY

“That’s all you can do. That’s all any of us can do.”

(Tommy pushes the buffer away leaving Paul standing alone.)
SCENE 14

Frozen Food dept.

(Paul, works some of the freight when he hears a voice over the intercom.)

INTERCOM

“Security scan area A and B.”

(Paul walks to the end of the aisle and looks towards the front desk, where Mary Beth is standing.)

PAUL

“What’s going on?”

MARY BETH

“Shop lifter. Some guy just left electronics and is heading this way. Stan called and said he’s sure the guy has a bunch of cds in his pants.”

PAUL

“Well, I’ll wait up here with you… maybe that will dissuade him from leaving with the discs.”

(Paul walks to the door and waits with Mary Beth.)

MARY BETH

“You gonna protect me from the big bad criminal?”

PAUL

“Sure… that and I could use a little excitement.”

(At this point a shifty little guy with his pants pulled halfway down and his ball cap turned slightly to the right comes towards the door. As he does he looks at Paul with a smirk. He walks through the door and the security device goes off. Paul turns to say something to the guy…)

PAUL

“Excuse me sir…”

(The guy starts to run… Paul starts to run after him and Paul yells some warnings as they make it into the middle of the parking lot.)

PAUL

“Hey!!! Stop!!!”

(At this point Paul gets close enough and then leaps on the guy… He lands dead on the guy and then flips him over so they are both face to face.)

PAUL

“I told you to stop.”

THUG

“Man, get off me!.”

(Paul gets real close to the thugs face.)

PAUL

“Please… just try to get away from me. I’ll put your pretty little thug face into the pavement until you bleed to death.”

THUG

“Man, take the stuff. It ain’t worth all of this shit.”

(Paul leans in closer to the thugs face.)

PAUL

“You know… if you pulled your pants up you might just have got away you freaking moron.”

(At this point Julia comes running up to the two men lying on the ground. Several others follow her.)

JULIA

“Holy crap.”
SCENE 15

Back hall by the office

(Julia walks out of the office where the thug and two cops are and shuts the door behind her. She walks up to Paul who is leaning against the wall.)

JULIA

“Paul… what were you thinking? You know that we aren’t allowed to do that. If we don’t see them with the item… we can’t do anything about it. You know that. You could be fired for it… Let’s just hope that that little punk isn’t smart enough to get a lawyer to sue you or the company.”

PAUL

“He ran… that meant he was guilty.”

JULIA

“He ran? That’s your excuse? (SIGH!) Have we ever chased down a thief in the five years you’ve been here?”

PAUL

“No.”

(Paul lowers his head and puts his hand over his eyes.)

PAUL

“I don’t know why I did that. I just felt like I needed to.”

(Julia shakes her head and stands there a moment before she speaks again.)

JULIA

“Look… you go back to work. I’ll think of what we can do about this. You know I’ll back you as best I can… we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

PAUL

“Ok… I’m sorry, Julia.”

JULIA

“I know… we’ll take care of it, Paul…”

(Paul turns to leave and Julia stops him.)

JULIA

“He says you insulted him too… is that true?”

PAUL

“Well… I wouldn’t really call it an insult… I just called him a moron because of his clothes.”

JULIA

“Mmmmm… yeah… well, that’s not for us to decide… go back to work.”

PAUL

“Sorry, Julia.”

(Paul walks away from Julia and she watches him go… she shakes her head again and then goes back into the office.)

SCENE 16

H.B.A.

(Stan walks up to where Cindy is working.)

STAN

“Hey! How’s it going?”

CINDY

“Slow, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.”

STAN

“Good… good. That was some excitement we had a while ago wasn’t it?

CINDY

“I missed it, but I heard about it through...”

STAN

“Tommy?”

CINDY

“Yeah.”

STAN

“Of course… it’s new gossip. Anyways, we’re going to lunch if you care to join us.”

(at that moment Tommy comes around the corner.)

TOMMY

“I do not gossip… I just tell the truth.”

STAN

“Ah yes… the gospel according to the reverend Tommy Jones.”

TOMMY

“I prefer Brother Tommy.”

(Tommy turns and walks away.)

CINDY

“Was he waiting around the corner just to be able to say that?”

(From around the corner Tommy speaks up.)

TOMMY

“No… just a coincidence.”

STAN

“Or so you say…” (Turning back to Cindy.) “So… you want to join us?”

(She looks around at the freight lying around.)

CINDY

“Umm… sure. Let me just pick up a bit first.”

STAN

“No worries. I’m going to get Paul. Maybe he’ll be better than he was on break.”

CINDY

“He’s going through a tough time. I know. I just broke up with my ex, like three months ago.”

STAN

“Oh… You’re single?”

CINDY

“Yeah…”

STAN

“Me too.”

CINDY

“Oh… that’s hard to believe. You’re cute. I’m surprised no one has snatched you up.”

(Stan blushes slightly.)

STAN

“It‘s not easy keeping anyone when you work third… besides I‘m not exactly the most desirable guy on the planet.”

CINDY

“I wouldn’t exactly say that… I mean… ummm…”

(Cindy blushes.)

CINDY

“Sorry… uh… I believe I just embarrassed myself.”

STAN

“No reason to be… truthfully… I was just thinking how cute you are when you blush.”

CINDY

“Thank you… I not usually embarrassed though… so don’t expect me to look cute often.”

STAN

“Oh… oh… no… I mean you’re cute all the time… I just meant…”

(Stan blushes bright red.)

CINDY

“I know… I was just picking.”

(They stare at each other, smiling for a few moments.)

STAN

“Well… umm… thanks you again though… for calling me cute, not for picking…”  (He clears his throat) “…although that was ok though… so um… let me get… umm, whoever I was gonna get.”

CINDY

“Paul?”

STAN

“No.. It’s Stan.”

CINDY

“No, I mean you were going to get Paul.”

STAN

“Right… let me go get him. I’ll see you in the back.”

CINDY

“I’ll see you there.”

(Stan starts to walk towards the frozen food dept. looking over his shoulder at Cindy. He bumps into a display . At that point with a bit of embarrassment he turns to watch where he is going.  Eventually he makes it to the freezers where he finds Paul standing on the aisle looking down at his box cutter.)

STAN

“Hey, man. Whatcha doing?”

PAUL

“Umm... Checking my blade.”

STAN

“You need some new ones? We just got a box in tonight.”

(Stan reaches into is back pocket and pulls a small sleeve of blades out and hands them to Paul.)

PAUL

“Thanks.”

STAN’

“That’s one of the upsides to working on the GM side. We come up on supplies before anyone else.”

PAUL

“Yep.”

STAN

“Yep… so, that was some real excitement a while ago.”

PAUL

“I really don’t want to talk about it.”

STAN

“Oh… ok… No problem… you know… I think that new girl, Cindy, is flirting with me.”

PAUL

“Cool.”

(Stan can see that Paul is acting a bit standoffish.)

STAN

“Yep… so, uh… you ready for lunch?

PAUL

“No… I think I’ll work a while longer. I have a lot of freight and I got a little behind earlier.”

STAN

“Yeah… but you should go.. Don’t let everything that’s happened today keep you from joining us. It’ll be ok.. Huh… look at this. Usually you’re trying to talk me into going to lunch with everyone. It’s kind of funny.”

PAUL

“Yeah… well, I think I’ll work a while longer. You go ahead.”

STAN

“Alright, Paul. If you’re sure.”

PAUL

“Yeah.. Go ahead.”

STAN

“Alright, but come back in a bit, ok? It’s not as much fun without you.”

PAUL

“Will do.”

(Stan leaves Paul standing there and heads on to lunch.)
SCENE 17

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sitting on the couch.)

PAUL

“What would you do when the last hope for living a seemingly happy life goes away?”
SCENE 18

Grocery dept.

(Cindy walks down one of the aisles which were now abandoned by the grocery workers who had gone to lunch. As she looked at possible food for her own lunch a customer comes around the corner  with a confused look on his face. Then he has a look of relief as he sees her.)

CUSTOMER

“Oh, thank God. Excuse me… miss!”

(Cindy turns with the terror, due to the realization that he was talking to her.)

CINDY

“Uh… can I help you?”

CUSTOMER

“Could you please tell me where the…”

(The customer fumbles with his grocery list and then after looking at it he looks back at her.)

CUSTOMER

“… uh… cranberry sauce is? My wife sent me out. I have no idea where it is and I‘m close to quitting.”

CINDY

“Uh… umm… actually I don’t know. This is my first night. Let me see if I can find someone who knows. I think the guy in the freezer is still there. Everyone else has gone to lunch.”

(They both walk over to the frozen food department… As they walk around the corner Cindy sees Paul standing with his back to her. She begins to ask him her question she looks down at the floor below him. She sees a growing puddle of blood… She approaches him quickly.)

CINDY

“Oh, my God!!! Are you ok? What happened?”

(Paul turns to her with his box cutter in one hand and a slit in his other wrist… the blood drips onto the floor below him.)

CINDY

“Holy crap!!!”

(Cindy knocks the box cutter out of his hand and then grabs his wrist to attempt to stop the bleeding. As she presses down on Paul’s wrist Paul slumps down to the floor.)

CINDY

“What the hell did you do? Was this an accident?”

(Cindy looks over her shoulder and screams at the customer…)

CINDY

“Call the ambulance… call someone!!!”

(The customer looks on, open mouthed with shock until Cindy starts screaming again.)

CINDY

“Go… get help!”

(Cindy turns back to Paul.)

CINDY

“You better not have a disease. Why the hell did you do this?”

(Paul speaks weakly.)

PAUL

“There’s no point… no point… she was my life… and now it’s over.”

CINDY

“No one is worth dying over.”

(Paul starts mumbling his answers.)

PAUL

“I… I asked her to marry me.”

CINDY

“Oh, man!.”

PAUL

“I asked her to marry me… I wanted to spend… my whole life with her… I just wanted… her.”

(At this point the loss of blood causes Paul to slump over unconscious. Cindy continues to try to keep what’s left of his blood from continuing to poor out of his wrist. From behind them Stan, Julia and several others appear… fade to black.)
SCENE 19

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sits on the couch talking to the doctor.)

“As the door closed I saw her standing there. She wasn’t smiling. She wasn’t crying… she was just standing there… but she was on the other side… and I wanted so bad to be on that side… but I wasn’t. All I could do was watch her stand there. Then the door was closed and everything just went black.”
SCENE 20

Break room three months ago

(The group of associates sitting around the tables at lunch consists of Paul, Krissy, Julia, Tommy, Stan, Gnome, Sandy and couple of random associates. They all sit at the tables eating and carrying on several conversations at once. The conversation between Paul, Krissy and Julia is our main focus but we make a round around the room as we film this scene.)

PAUL

(To Krissy)”What do you mean you haven’t seen it? It’s a classic… hell, I thought you’ve seen most everything I have. I’ve got to let you borrow it. I just can’t stand to see such a connoisseur of fine films miss out on one of the best.”

JULIA

“I don’t believe that Attack of the Killer Tomatoes can truly be considered much of a quote un quote fine film… for that matter… the best.”

PAUL

“Apparently you haven’t seen it.”

JULIA

“Oh I’ve seen it… back in my pot smoking days.” (She looks at the rest of the table and speaks out loud to the people) “You all didn’t hear that.”

(Gnome pops up from behind Stan and looks at her.)

GNOME

“Pot? Weed? The green meanie? Julia? You were a smoker?”

PAUL

“Who are you kidding? Julia was a rocker!”

STAN

“Green meanie?”

KRISSY

“I’m sure she was back in the day.”

JULIA

“Back in the day? I’m not that old. How old do you think I am?”

TOMMY

“No one’s going there.”

JULIA

“No… seriously… how old do you think I am?”

PAUL

“Oh… seventy… or older I’m sure.”

JULIA

“Screw you! I’m thirty five, you jerk.”

STAN

“Oh my god you’re old!!!”

JULIA

“Jerks.”

(Tommy, who was sitting across from Sandy, continues a conversation with Sandy… who is sitting across from Tommy.”

TOMMY

“… and she was on meth.”

GNOME

(Her gaze snaps towards Tommy) “Julia did meth?!!”

TOMMY

“What? No! I was talking about someone else.”

(The conversation  which is still in play returns to Paul and Krissy.)

PAUL

“Sure… it’s not a big budget film like Jaws… which is a masterpiece, but it’s still a fun film.”

JULIA

“Don’t listen to him. It’s lame.”

KRISSY

“Well, I guess if…”

(At this point Krissy’s face slightly distorts as she reaches into her pocket and pulls out her phone. She pushes a button and  reads a text on her phone. She scowls and gets up.)

KRISSY

“I’ve got to go out. I’m gonna clock in Julia.”

JULIA

“He’s here?”

KRISSY

“Yeah.”

JULIA

“Ok.”

(Krissy gets up and walks out the door. Julia shakes her head.)

JULIA

“She needs to get away from that jerk.”

PAUL

“What? Wait a second… don’t put us on the same level as that asshole.”

JULIA

“Oh… sorry. We need to get her away from that sorry ass broke prick.”

SANDY

“Julia!”

PAUL

“No… that’s accurate.”

JULIA

“Sorry.”

(Paul looks over at Julia a bit more seriously and speaks softly to her as other conversations continue around them.)

PAUL

“I wish I could get her Julia.”

JULIA

“Get her?”

PAUL

“Away… sorry… I wish I could get her away from him. She can do so much better.”

JULIA

“No doubt… but in the end it’s really up to her.”

( The group at the other end of the table erupts in laughter and Paul and Julia look up at them.)

TOMMY

“It’s a smoothie… I swear!”

(The group laughs again and Paul turns back to Julia.)

PAUL

“I know… I’m just sick of seeing her always down. Do you see how pale she’s been getting?”

JULIA

“Yeah… but all we can do is keep trying to talk to her about it and pray that she gets out of there.”

PAUL

“I’m not much for relying on prayer, Julia.”

(At this point Stan interrupts the two.)

STAN

“You remember that don’t you, Paul?”

(Paul looks at Stan with a slightly confused look.)

PAUL

“What am I remembering? I wasn’t paying attention.”

GNOME

“Supposedly when you two were working on first shift you were dating some major hoe-bag.”

STAN

“That is not what  we were talking about… although…”

PAUL

“Yeah… it’s true.”

STAN

“No… we were talking about the guy who looked like Robert Downy Jr. who always came in here.”

PAUL

“First off… hoe-bag, Gnome… talk about the pot and the kettle. If you know what I mean. And yeah… the guy looked just like him…”

(Paul and Stan speak simultaneously…)

PAUL AND STAN

“Except for his sideburns.”

GNOME

“Who are you calling a hoe-bag you easily manipulated asshole.

PAUL

“Seriously… what are you even doing here? Didn’t you quit?”

GNOME

“Yeah… but by coming here and rubbing the fact that I can leave any time I choose I get the satisfaction of watching you suffer from the depression and stomach pains this hell hole can bring a person.”

STAN

“And here I thought you just loved us.”

PAUL

“Actually since she got pregnant all her little boyfriends don’t want to have anything else to do with her.”

GNOME

“Right… whatever.”

PAUL

“Wow… good come back.”

GNOME

“Shut up and go back to work.”
SCENE 21

Grocery action alley

(Paul and Stan walk down the main aisle between groceries and ladies clothing.)

PAUL

“Seriously…  there are words that people have no other choice but to laugh at.”

STAN

“Such as?”

PAUL

“Rutabaga, rhubarb… penis.”

STAN

“Penis?”

PAUL

“Yes… penis. Tell me you didn’t want to laugh when I said it.”

STAN

“Said what?”

PAUL

“Penis!

STAN

“You’re on crack.. I swear it!”

(Paul and Stan see Krissy arguing with a skuzzy long haired guy wearing a cutoff sleeved shirt and pajama pants. As she hit’s the man in the arm she digs into her pocket.”

KRISSY

“Quit it!”

(She pulls out a wad of money and hands it to him.)

KRISSY

“Here… now go away. I have work to do.”

(Paul and Stan stand back as the guy walks past them and then they look back at Krissy who looks up to see them.)

KRISSY

“Paul… could you take me home again in the morning?”

PAUL

“Sure.”

KRISSY

“Thanks.”

(She turns around and walks away… Stan turns to see the look of disgust on Paul’s face.)

STAN

“That’s not our business.”

PAUL

“Isn’t it?”

STAN

“No.”

PAUL

“It’s not right, Stan. She doesn’t deserve that shit. She works her ass off for her money only to give all to that jackass and in turn he smokes it up… leaving her broke with no car. Why is she staying with that bastard?”

STAN

“Maybe she’s afraid of him… maybe she likes it. I don’t know.”

(Stan starts to walk away and Paul stands there still watching the direction where Krissy had gone.)

PAUL

“God, she’s cute.”

STAN

“…and?”

PAUL

“I’m just saying.”

STAN

“’Uh huh.”

PAUL

“I’m gonna change this.”

STAN

“Change what?”

(Paul looks at Stan and smiles.)

PAUL

“Everything.”

STAN

“Should I be worried about you?”

PAUL

“Well of course… oh…and don‘t tell Gnome. I don‘t need to hear about any of this from her.”

STAN

“In this situation I plead the fifth. This one is all on you.”

SCENE 22

Aisle two in the frozen food dept. same day

(Krissy walks up to Paul who was working on a case of pizza.)

KRISSY

“Hey, Paul. Could you help me make a bale?”

PAUL

“Sure… let me finish this box.”

(Krissy starts to walk away.)

PAUL

“Krissy.”

(Krissy turns back to look at Paul.)

KRISSY

“Yeah?”

PAUL

“So… when are you going to marry me?”

(Krissy’s jaw dropped and wide eyed looks at Paul. She takes a moment to answer.)

KRISSY

“What?”

PAUL

“When are you going to marry me?

KRISSY

“Are you kidding me?”

(Paul just smiles at her and shrugs.)

KRISSY

“Umm… ok… well don’t you think you skipped a few steps?”

PAUL

“Like what?”

KRISSY

“I don’t know… dating, maybe? We don’t even know each other, Paul.”

PAUL

“Don’t we… even after the past three years?”

KRISSY

“No… not really.”

(Paul stares at her for a moment  then with a quick grin he acknowledges her point.)

PAUL

“Ok…”

(Paul reaches out with his hand to offer to shake Krissy’s hand)

PAUL

“Hi… I’m Paul. I like classic rock, comics and long walks on the beach.”

KRISSY

“Ok… I think there might be a little more to getting to know each other than that.”

PAUL

“Oh…ok… alright. Dating and getting to know each other. I’ll remember that.”

(Krissy turns away, but then turns back to Paul.)

KRISSY

“What brought this on?”

(Paul shrugs his shoulders.)

PAUL

“Who knows? I guess I was just needed to know how long I had to wait.”

(Krissy looks at him a bit suspiciously, and then smiles.)

KRISSY

“Uh huh.”

(Krissy looks him over again and then walks away.)
SCENE 23

Paul’s car a few days later.

(Krissy talks while Paul drives up a little road with several mobile homes lining each side.)

KRISSY

“… if I could get away from him I’d go home to my mom. I miss her… and since the trucks broken I can’t make it back to even visit.”

PAUL

“I’ll take you any time you want.”

KRISSY

“I don’t think that’d be a good idea. You know how he gets.”

PAUL

“Actually no I don’t, but if it could cause problems for you… (SIGH) …you know… you just got to get out of there.”

KRISSY

“I know… I just can’t right now.”

PAUL

“Can‘t you?”

(Paul pulls into the driveway of a small mobile home. As he stops he looks at Krissy.)

PAUL

“Run away with me.”

KRISSY

“What?”

PAUL

“Run away with me. We’ll go to the beach… I don’t care which one… We’ll go there, find a place to live… get jobs. It’ll be great.”

(Krissy gives Paul a serious look…)

KRISSY

“I… I can’t. I just want to go home.”

PAUL

“It was just a thought.”

KRISSY

“It was a nice one, Paul.”

(Krissy opens the door of the vehicle to get out when she is stopped by Paul’s next remark.)

PAUL

“When are you gonna marry me, Krissy?”

(Krissy looks at him again with a grin.)

PAUL

“Oh wait… I mean go out with me. When are going to go out with me?’

(Kristy smiles a real honest smile and replies.)

KRISSY

“I don’t know… maybe one day.”
SCENE 24

City Park

(Krissy and Paul sit on a park bench early one morning after work… a few weeks later.)

PAUL

“You deserve better.”

KRISSY

“Like you?”

PAUL

“Not necessarily like me… but I promise you this… I’d treat you like a queen… like you deserve.”

KRISSY

“You would, wouldn’t you? I don’t deserve all of that. I’m not perfect, Paul.”

PAUL

“No one’s perfect, Krissy. I’m not perfect… I mean I am as close to perfect as a guy could be… but I’d try my best for you.”

(Krissy laughs)

KRISSY

“I know you would. I… I just don’t want to hurt you.”

PAUL

“Are you planning on hurting me?”

KRISSY

“No.”

PAUL

“Then you won’t.”

KRISSY

“I wouldn’t mean too.. I just have a really bad track of doing that to people.”

PAUL

“Just give me a chance.”

(Krissy looks at Paul for a moment and then lowers her head… she raises it back up and pushes her hair back as a smile crosses her face.)

KRISSY

“Ok.”

PAUL

“Really?”

KRISSY

“Yeah.”

(Paul stands up with his hands in the air.)

PAUL

“YES!!!!”

(Krissy laughs at Paul. )

KRISSY

“And how do you plan to get me out long enough to take me out?”

(Paul stops, leaving his hands in the air as a  realization hits him.)

PAUL

“Shit.”

(Krissy smiles and stands up next to him. She pulls his arms down and hugs him.)

KRISSY

“That’s ok… we’ll figure something out.”

PAUL

“We’ll do the town… I don’t know exactly what that means… but by God we’ll do it.”

KRISSY

“You are so silly.”

PAUL

“I try.”

SCENE 25

Backroom

(Paul and Krissy are walking towards the doors leading out of the back room. Paul was pulling a pallet on a jack when he hit’s the wall almost yanking him back as he does.)

PAUL

“Shit!”

(Krissy laughs.)

PAUL

“You laughing at me?

KRISSY

“I wouldn’t do that.”

PAUL

“Uh huh.”

KRISSY

“You don’t believe me?”

PAUL

“My dear… if you told me that the sky was falling I’d believe you.”

(Krissy stops and stands in front of Paul with her head cocked slightly and her eyebrow raised.)

KRISSY

“You sure that’s wise?”

PAUL

“What? Believing you?

KRISSY

“Yeah.”

PAUL

“If you can’t believe in the person you’re gonna marry… who can you believe in.”

(Krissy smiles and leans in and quickly hugs Paul.)

KRISSY

“You’re so cheesy.”

PAUL

“I’m all about the cheese, baby.”

(Krissy kisses him again.)

KRISSY

“Your awesome… you know that? I really don’t deserve you.”

PAUL

“No… I don’t deserve you, Krissy.”

(Krissy looks at her watch… and with a slightly worried look on her face she speaks.)

KRISSY

“Crap… I got a couple of things I got to take care of before lunch.”

PAUL

“Ok.”

(As she turns to leave Paul taps her on the shoulder and she turns.)

KRISSY

“Yeah?”

PAUL

“So… when are you going to marry me?”

(Krissy grins and then with a wink…)

KRISSY

“Just  as soon as I’m ready.”

(Krissy turns and walks out the door leaving Paul with the biggest stupid grin on his face. He turns around and pulls his pallet away from the wall and a few seconds later Stan and The Gnome (still pregnant) walk through the doors and walk up to Paul.)

STAN

“Hey, Paul… look who just showed up to have lunch with us.”

PAUL

“Again?”

GNOME

“Yeah… so… I wanted to hang out with…”

(Gnome looks at Paul and squints her eyes at him and a frown comes upon her face.)

GNOME

“What did you do?”

PAUL

“What? What do you mean what did…”

GNOME

“What did you do?”

PAUL

“I didn’t do anything.”

(Gnome starts to circle around Paul and look him up and down.)

GNOME

“You’re in love!!!”

(Paul looks at her shocked.)

PAUL

“Who said? I didn‘t say anything about being in love.”

GNOME

“You are… I can see it in that damn smile you had on your face. I’ve caused a lot of silly little boys to smile that way. You’re in love… and what’s worse you won’t admit it… that means you know it’s someone you shouldn’t be with.”

(Stan looks at Paul up and down. Then leans in to speak to Paul.)

STAN

“I don’t see it.”

GNOME

“Who is it?”

(Gnome steps back and gasps.)

GNOME

“It’s Krissy!!!”

(Paul looks at Stan.)

PAUL

“Did you say something?”

STAN

“I said nothing.”

PAUL

“Well, then how…”

(Gnome points her finger at Paul and shakes it at him.)

GNOME

“You stay away from her, Paul!!! She’s too strong for you. She’ll hurt you.”

PAUL

“What?”

GNOME

“I’m warning you now… don’t come to me when she hurts you… don’t say a word! Come on Stan!”

(Gnome turns around and walks away… Stan looks Paul up and down again.)

STAN

“I still don’t see it… but she does have weird powers.”

PAUL

“What the hell just happened here?”

(Stan shrugs and walks away leaving Paul standing with his eyes wide and his mouth standing open.)

SCENE 26

Break room

(Paul and Krissy sit in the break room the next night. Paul stares into Krissy‘s eyes… Krissy blushes.)

KRISSY

“Paul… stop.”

PUAL

“I can’t.”

KRISSY

“Why?”

PAUL

“Because.. You have the most beautiful eyes.”

(Krissy blushes some more and then covers her face and turns slightly away… Paul keeps staring. She looks back through her fingers and sees him still staring.)

KRISSY

“Stop.”

PAUL

“Sorry… I just can’t do that.”

KRISSY

“Won’t you ever listen to me?”

PAUL

“Yes… always.”

KRISSY

“Well, then why aren’t you?”

PAUL

“I said I listened. I didn’t say  I would always obey.”

(She looks at him with a smile then speaks again.)

KRISSY

“Paul?”

(Paul continues to stare at Krissy.)

PAUL

“Yes?”

KRISSY

“When are you going to kiss me?”

(Paul’s eyes grow wide with shock.)

PAUL

“Uh… Oh, God! I wish you wouldn’t have asked me that.”

KRISSY

“Why?”

PAUL

“Because now I’m nervous.”

(Krissy grins.)

KRISSY

“Why?”

PAUL

“Because… now I feel obligated. I just want it to be good… you know? I just… it’s been a long time. I don’t want to screw it up.”

(Krissy giggles.)

KRISSY

“Oh, I don’t think you’ll screw it up.”

PAUL

“But I could. I screw things up all the time.”

KRISSY

“Do I have to take this into my own hands?”

PUAL

“Maybe… no… just give me some time. You just got me all flustered.”

KRISSY

“Well, don’t wait to long.”
SCENE 27

City Park

(Paul and Krissy sit on the park bench the next morning.)

KRISSY

“What time is it?”

PAUL

“It’s getting late.”

KRISSY

“You should get me home then. He’s probably still sleeping, but you never know.”

PAUL

“I’ve got to get you out of there.”

KRISSY

“Someday.”

PAUL

“You know my offer still stands. You always have a place with me.”

KRISSY

“If I move out… no… when I move out it’ll be home first. I’m sorry.”

PAUL

“No reason to be sorry. It’s totally understandable.”

(Krissy stands up and Paul stands up next to her. He places her hand in his and turns her to him.)

KRISSY

“We should go.”

PAUL

“Yeah.”

(Paul leans in and slowly kisses her. She lets go of his hand and puts her arms around him as they kiss. When they finally break apart…)

KRISSY

“You’re shaking.”

PAUL

“Yeah.”

KRISSY

“Why?”

PAUL

“I just… I don’t know? I guess I was scared. I told you I didn’t want to screw it up.”

(Krissy kisses him again.)

KRISSY

“Well, you didn’t.”

( The kiss passionately for a few moments. Until Paul, eyes closed says…)

PAUL

“I love you.”

(Paul realizes what he said and his eyes spring open extra wide.)

PAUL

“Oh, God! I didn’t mean to say that.”

(Krissy who is still in Paul’s arms equally shocked by what Paul said looks up at his terror face.)

KRISSY

“You didn’t mean to say that?”

PAUL

“No.”

KRISSY

“But… did you mean it?”

(Paul acts a little ashamed.)

PAUL

“I meant it… I didn’t mean to say it.”

KRISSY

“Why?”

PAUL

“I didn’t want to scare you away.”

(She leans in and kisses him again.)

KRISSY

“Well, I love you too, Paul.”

(Paul stares into Krissy’s eyes and she blushes.  From there Paul leans in and they kiss again.)
SCENE 28

Paul’s House/ Krissy’s house

(Paul and Stan are playing video games when Paul’s phone rings and Paul drops his controller and grabs his cell.)

PAUL

“Hey, baby.”

(Switch scene to Krissy… back and forth throughout the scene.)

KRISSY

“Hey.”

(Back to Paul’s)

PAUL

“So, how is your trip to your mom’s going?”

KRISSY

“It’s going great… I have something I have to tell you though.”

PAUL

“Shoot.”

(Stan pops in to the conversation.)

STAN

“I am… and you’re dead.”

PAUL

“I’m not talking to you.”

STAN

“I kind of gathered.”

(Back to Krissy.)

KRISSY

“Who’s there?”

PAUL

“Stan... he’s talked me into playing this damn game with him. I suck at it though. Half  the time I’m lost… I keep dying. He thinks it’s fun but I can’t see how a one sided game like this can be fun.”

STAN

“Winning is always fun.”

PAUL

“How would I know… anyways, what’s up?”

KRISSY

“Well… The truck broke down on assholes way home…”

PAUL

“And you need me to come pick you up?”

KRISSY

“Actually… I’m staying here, Paul. I’m not coming back.”

(Paul’s face drops at this realization.)

KRISSY

“I’ve already called and spoke to Julia. She’s gonna put my vacation hours in and use that as my two weeks’ notice.”

PAUL

“Oh.”

(At this point Stan looks up at the shocked and horrified face of Paul and gives him a questioning look and moths the words “What‘s wrong?”. Paul looks down at him and puts his hand up and shakes his head to keep him quiet.)

PAUL

“So… what… what about…”

KRISSY

“What about what?”

PAUL

“What about me?”

KRISSY

“Well… I thought maybe you could come and see me.”

(Paul takes a noticeable breath out as he let himself breath again.)

PAUL

“Oh, God… I was afraid…”

KRISSY

“Afraid... of what?”

PAUL

“Nothing. You know I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

KRISSY

“I’ll send you directions on your email.”

PAUL

“I’ll be there as soon as you want me there.”

KRISSY

“I believe we can wait until your next night off.”

PAUL

“I don’t know… Monday is a long ways off.”

KRISSY

“It’s only two nights.”

PAUL

“An eternity to not see those beautiful blue eyes of yours.”

STAN

“Ugh… you guys make me wanna puke.”

(Krissy giggles on the other end of the line.)

KRISSY

“Yeah… me too.”

SCENE 29

Krissy’s front porch, Monday night

(Krissy and Paul stand out on the front Porch. Paul looking up at the stars.)

PAUL

“It’s beautiful out here, Krissy.”

KRISSY

“I love it here.”

(Paul looks at her smiling face.)

PAUL

“You look… so  happy.”

KRISSY

“I am.”

(Paul pulls her close to him and hugs her tight.)

PAUL

“I’m so happy for you, baby.”

KRISSY

“So… what were you afraid of?”

PAUL

“What?”

KRISSY

“The other night on the phone you said you were afraid… but you never said of what.”

(Paul sighs and they separate a bit and he looks down into her eyes.)

PAUL

“I was afraid I was going to lose you.”

KRISSY

“You’re not getting rid of me that easy.”

PAUL

“God, I hope not.”

(They hug tightly again for a moment… then without separating Paul speaks again.)

PAUL

“I love you Krissy… I love being in your arms. I could stay here forever.”

KRISSY

“I love you too, Paul.”

PAUL

“Can I?”

KRISSY

“What?”

PAUL

“Stay in your arms forever?”

(Krissy looks up at him again and looks at the love in Paul’s eyes.)

KRISSY

“Yes.”

PAUL

“I don‘t have much to offer you Krissy… I don’t have a lot of money… and I can‘t promise you‘ll be happy with me all of the time... but I can give you my heart… and I can promise you that I‘ll love you forever. It‘s really the only things in this world I have that are mine to give you… and as long as I‘m here on this world… they’re yours. ”

KRISSY

“You’re too good for me Paul.”

PAUL

“No… you’re too good for me… and I promise you that I’ll do my best to make you as happy as you make me. I love you so much, Krissy.”

KRISSY

“And I love you, Paul.”

(They hug under the stars and the picture fades to black.)
SCENE 30

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sits on the couch and talks to the doctor.)

PAUL

“Love is a paradise… and when you find it you don’t want anything else. The problem is… Paradise is so easily lost. It takes your whole life to find it, but only a second to lose it. What you do from there… that defines how strong you are. Do you give up and die… or do you move on in search of paradise anew? I guess by now you know which of the two I did.”
SCENE 31

Hospital room

(Paul lies in bed and Julia walks in.)

JULIA

“Hi, Paul.”

PAUL

“Julia.”

JULIA

“What you did was an accident… wasn’t it?”

PAUL

“What do you think?”

JULIA

“Well, according to what I told Big Daddy it was. Everyone on third agrees to keep it known that way.”

PAUL

“Why?”

JULIA

“You have enough to worry about. I just want you to know that you still have a job when you get back.”

PAUL

“Why would I want to come back?”

JULIA

“Maybe you don’t… but you need to take this time to rest… not worry about where you’ll go afterwards. I checked into it… you have some personal time and you can use it until your workmen’s comp kicks in.”

PAUL

“Ok.”

JULIA

“Paul… why did you do it? She isn’t worth all this.”

PAUL

“Maybe not to you.”

JULIA

“She shouldn’t be for you either. What’s worse is Tommy and Stan are both feeling guilty. They are both blaming themselves for this… Tommy for what he said and Stan for giving you the blades.”

PAUL

“They didn’t have anything to do with this.”

JULIA

“I know that… but you’re going to have a hard time convincing them that… especially Stan. He thinks he almost killed his best friend.”

PAUL

“Sorry.”

JULIA

“Don’t be sorry, Paul. Just don’t do something stupid like this again… and please… get better soon. Life is worth living.”

(Paul looks away with shame.)

PAUL

“Yeah.”

JULIA

“I’m gonna go now, Paul. Feel better.”

PAUL

“I’ll try.”

(Julia leaves and a few moments later Cindy comes in.)

PAUL

Hi… uh…”

CINDY

“Cindy.”

PAUL

“Cindy… right. Sorry.”

CINDY

“You would think you could remember the girl who squeezed your veins shut long enough to keep you alive.”

PAUL

“I should thank you…”

CINDY

“I hear a but in there.”

PAUL

“ But I didn’t ask you too.”

CINDY

“Do you think I was gonna let someone die on my first night?”

PAUL

“Truthfully… I don’t think that’s ever been a problem before… at least not in this profession.”

CINDY

“So you decide to make my first night the first? Well, I did hear that working at this place was a killer.”

(Paul smiles.)

PAUL

“What are you trying to do.. Make me laugh or something?”

CINDY

“Well, from what people tell me… you have a great laugh… and the way I hear it you’re usually the one who brings the laughter into the room.”

PAUL

“What can I say… you caught me on an off day.”

CINDY

“Yeah… Well, I usually faint at the sight of blood. I guess we’re both having an off day.”

(Paul laughs a little.)

CINDY

“See.. That didn’t hurt all that bad. Did it?”

PAUL

“I don’t know… it might hurt my chances of getting into heaven… you know… laughing in the face of death and all.”

CINDY

“I think you better learn to sing or play a musical instrument because the only heaven you could reach by doing what you did would be Rock And Roll Heaven… but I’m not getting into any more debates on religion or politics. That can lead you into all kinds of trouble.”

PAUL

“As opposed to slitting one’s wrist?”

(Cindy pushes back a strand of her hair and gets a bit more serious.)

CINDY

“You know… I’ve been there too.”

(Paul smiles a bit.)

PAUL

“Where? Rock and Roll Heaven?”

CINDY

“No… I’ve been so broken down that life just seemed worthless.”

(Paul’s smile goes stone cold and his face turns red with anger.)

PAUL

“Let me guess… you were wrong and you believe that life is worth living  and I should too right? Maybe…”

CINDY

“Hey! Don’t get defensive with me. You don’t know me. I have more shit wrong with me then you will ever know. My whole life went to crap when my mom died. My dad’s a drunk and… and… you know what? Yeah… life is worth living. I went through some stuff and I did something stupid, but I’m here… and believe it or not I know what I’m talking about. So listen to me damn it.”

(Paul looks back a bit shocked.)

PAUL

“Ok… I’m listening.”

(Cindy stares at Paul when her anger subsides and she gets a slight look of confusion.)

CINDY

“What was I saying?”

PAUL

“Life’s worth living.”

CINDY

“That’s right… some girl isn’t worth dying over.”

PAUL

“Maybe she isn’t… and maybe she is.”

(Paul sighs deeply and looks down.)

PAUL

“Stan is my best friend… I trust everything he says… because everything I he says is the truth. He’s the smartest person I now. I may not listen to what he says at the time he says it… but everything he’s told me, warned me about… he’s been dead on. He’s warned me about every girl I’ve ever dated… Maybe he wasn’t very subtle about it… but was dead on… ‘Don’t date her’… ‘She’s a slut’… ‘She’s a bitch’… ‘She’ll hurt you’…”

(Cindy reaches down and touches his hand as he continues.)

PAUL

“One day before I started dating Krissy, he overheard me ask her to marry me. I was doing everything I could to get her away from that ex of hers. After she left he came up to me and said ‘You can’t save her, Paul’. I looked at him and without even thinking I said ‘I’m not trying to save her… I’m trying to save myself’… and it hit me… all this time it was always about me. I wanted her and I was using her ex to get her. Every time I saw these good looking guys flirting with her… and she would smile and giggle… every time I saw that it would drive me nuts… I know I’m not like those guys… I’m not some hot guy with everything going for me… All they wanted was to get into her pants… I wanted so much more than that… I wanted her heart… and after I said that to Stan… after I told him I was trying to save myself… he just stared at me for a second and then said ‘ok’… not how bad she is for me… not how she was going to hurt me… just ‘ok’. My best friend finally said that I had found the right girl. He said she was ok… he said in one word that I had finally found the one… she was the one.”

CINDY

“And maybe she was… from what I hear you did a good thing when you got her out of the bad relationship she was apparently in. At least you can live with that thought.”

PAUL

“Maybe… but I did it for a selfish reason. I thought that she should be mine because I did that.”

CINDY

“Listen, Paul… You did a good thing from what everyone tells me… and even the most selfless act done by an honorable person can become a selfish action. I don’t think I have ever met a person in this world who wasn’t a little selfish…”

(At this point Krissy comes in to the room. Her eyes are red from crying… also, just so you know… she’s so mad she ignores Cindy.)

KRISSY

“What the hell did you think you were doing? Did you think this stupid stunt would get me back?”

PAUL

“Actually I was hoping that what I did would keep me from having to think about that or anything else again.”

KRISSY

“That’s not fucking funny, Paul.”

PAUL

“I wasn’t trying to be funny, Krissy.”

(Krissy stares at him for a second and then starts to cry.)

KRISSY

“ASSHOLE!!!!”

(Krissy storms back out the room. Cindy looks at Paul who was beginning to cry and then follows Krissy out of the room… When Cindy makes it out of the room she sees Krissy leaning against the wall with her hands over her face she sobs. Cindy walks up in front of her.)

CINDY

“Hi… so you’re her, huh?”

(Krissy looks up at Cindy with tears in her eyes… She wipes at the tears and then acknowledges Cindy.)

KRISSY

“Who are you?”

CINDY

“I’m Cindy. I took your place at the store.”

KRISSY

“Oh… what do you mean I’m her?”

CINDY

“You’re her… the girl who could make a guy love her so much he’d want to kill himself instead of live without her… I’m glad I got to meet you.”

KRISSY

“What?”

CINDY

“I mean your cute and all… but I just don’t see it.”

KRISSY

“Who the hell are you to put this on me?”

CINDY

“Oh… I’m not saying it’s all on you. I don’t even know you. I just can’t understand a love that strong. I’ve never found a man that loyal… that loving.”

(Krissy points at Cindy.)

KRISSY

“Oh, yeah… I’m so horrible, right? I broke his heart. I’m the bitch… Well, did you know that he broke up with me?”

CINDY

“What?”

KRISSY

“That’s right! He broke up with me.”

CINDY

“That‘s not what I heard.”

KRISSY

“Well, he did… and who are you to judge anyone after you’ve only known him one night. You don’t know anything.”

CINDY

“Why did he break up with you?”

KRISSY

“That’s none of your business. I don’t even know you.”

CINDY

“Oh, yeah… Well, I’m Cindy… I’m the girl who held your ex-boyfriend’s wrist, trying to stop the bleeding long enough for the ambulance to get there. I kept him alive. I believe that that makes me more involved than any of the other people at that place that he calls friends.”

KRISSY

“You saved him?”

CINDY

“Yeah.”

KRISSY

“Thank you.”

CINDY

“Why did he break up with you?”

KRISSY

“He… thought I was falling for another guy… and even though it broke his heart… he wanted the best for me… even if that meant leaving me.”

CINDY

“And were you falling for the guy?”

(Krissy hesitates before answering.)

KRISSY

“He’s just a friend.”

CINDY

“Is that why you hesitated?”

KRISSY

“You have to understand… I love Paul. I just don’t love him the way he wants me too. He was so good to me and even when everyone else had given up on me he believed in me. He loved me so much, but I just didn’t feel the same way. I thought I did, but…”

CINDY

“So, you let him break up with you? That keeps you blame free.”

KRISSY

“I never wanted to hurt him.”

CINDY

“Yeah, well… I’m pretty sure if he tried to kill himself that he was undoubtedly hurt. He is so in love with you that he was going to give up his life because he couldn’t be with you… damn foolish, but I’d guess that you’ll be lucky to find anyone who loves you like that again. Maybe you didn’t try to hurt him but you did it anyways… and in turn I think you might have hurt yourself too. Maybe you should go back in there and at least tell him something to try and make it better.”

KRISSY

“Tell him what? Tell him that I still love him and get his hopes up again? That would be too cruel.”

CINDY

“Maybe... Then I guess your best bet would be to leave now and never come back. That way you can’t hurt him anymore. Of course that won’t make you feel any better… will it?”

(Krissy leans against the wall and puts her head in her hands.)

KRISSY

“I love him… if I didn’t I wouldn’t be here… but I hurt him and I know going in there and telling him that I love him would hurt him more.”

CINDY

“Ok… don’t tell him you love him. Just go in there and reassure him he’ll be ok without you… and telling him he’s a good guy isn’t enough. I’ve seen what that does first hand. Just help him understand that his life is still worth living… 'cause I don’t think he believes it right now.”

(Krissy continues to lean against the wall.. Her hand wipes the tears away again. Then she walks back towards the room, when Cindy stops her.)

CINDY

“One suggestion… don’t call the guy who just slit his wrist an asshole.”

(Krissy walks into the room where Paul is still lying in the bed. Paul has his eyes covered with his hands as he cries… he’s oblivious to Krissy’s entering the room. Krissy sits on the chair next to the bed and puts her hand on his arm. Paul looks up.)

KRISSY

“Hey.”

(Paul wipes the tears.)

PAUL

“Hey.”

KRISSY

“Look what I’ve done to you.”

PAUL

“What you’ve done to me?”

KRISSY

“I hurt you… I didn’t want to, but I did it.”

PAUL

“Oh, Krissy…”

KRISSY

“I hurt you and now look at you. I can’t stand to see you like this, Paul.”

(Paul tears up and Krissy leans up to the rail of the bed and puts her hand on his.)

KRISSY

“All I could think of when I found out… I lost you. I lost my best friend… the guy who cared for me so much that even when everyone else gave up on me… he wouldn‘t… and then I got mad. How could you be so selfish? How could you take all of that away from me? I realize… that’s what I did to you. I took my love away from you and I expected you to understand. I thought we could be just like we were… friends… like we use to be.”

(Krissy reaches up and wipes a tear from Paul’s cheek.)

KRISSY

“… but how can we when I know that just being around you causes you pain?”

(Krissy pulls her hand away from Paul’s cheek and slightly steps back away from him.)

KRISSY

“I really should go… you don’t need me here hurting you more.”

(Paul reaches up and grabs her hand.)

PAUL

“No… please don’t go… not now.”

(Krissy rubs her eyes and steps back over to Paul.)

PAUL

“I love you Krissy.”

KRISSY

“I love you too, Paul… I always have. Don’t ever question that… but I just don’t… I can’t love you the way you want me to. I’m sorry.”

PAUL

“What’s wrong with me, Krissy?”

KRISSY

“There’s nothing wrong with you, Paul.”

PAUL

“There’s something wrong with me… otherwise you wouldn’t have left me for some other guy.”

KRISSY

“I promise you… even though you probably won’t believe me… there is nothing wrong with you. You’re… you’re great. For two years I couldn’t wait to get to work. I knew that no matter how bad things were at the trailer… as long as you were at work I was gonna laugh and I was going to smile. I loved talking to you over the aisles about nothing and yet now I know that our nothing was everything to me… and it just killed me when you would whistle the theme to the Muppet Show but when it came to the part when the two grumpy old men sang you would sing both parts.”

PAUL

“It’s the only part I can remember.”

KRISSY

“…and I hope that you never learn the rest of it… it just wouldn’t be the same.”

(Paul looks down at his wrist for a moment in contemplation and then he looked back up at Krissy.)

PAUL

“Krissy… are you happy?”

KRISSY

“Truthfully… not at the moment.”

PAUL

“No… really… are you happy with him?”

(Krissy lowers her head.)

KRISSY

“… yes.”

(Paul sighs… lays his head back and raises his hands up over his eyes. Then he looks back at Krissy.)

PAUL

“All I really ever wanted was to see you happy, Krissy… one way or another. The problem was that I wanted it one way and you went the other.”

KRISSY

“I’m sorry.”

PAUL

“No… there’s no reason to be sorry. I’m the one who should be sorry. Look what I’m putting you through.”

KRISSY

“Let’s not go through the blame game, Paul. I blame me. You blame you… I believe we both have some regrets here.”

PAUL

“Yeah… and one of mine is not being able to let go when you needed me too…”

(Paul pulls his hand away from Krissy’s and places it on her cheek… and looks deep into her eyes.)

PAUL

“My pretty little blue eyes… go home and be with your mom (SIGH!!!) and your guy. Go be happy.”

(He pulls his hand away from her cheek and she leans in and hugs him.)

KRISSY

“You need to be happy too, Paul.”

PAUL

“If you’re happy… then I’m happy.”

(Krissy turns to leave and then stops.)

KRISSY

“You know… I left home twice, Paul. The first time I left my mom to be with that asshole. The second time is when I went back to live with my mom. No matter how many times we joked about that place being hell… you made it home… hell was having to see the hurt in your eyes every morning when you took me back to that trailer. You guys are my family… and I love you all… and I love you, Paul.”

(Krissy walks in and hugs him again… tightly.)

PAUL

“I love you too.”

(From the door way Cindy is peeking in and Stan walks up behind her. She looks over her shoulder at him and then back in the crack in the door.)

STAN

“So… how is it going in there?”

CINDY

“Saying goodbye is always hard.”

STAN

“Mhm.”

(Cindy steps away from the door and lets it shut.)

CINDY

“I believe they’re going to be ok.”

STAN

“It’ll take time though.”

CINDY

“Without a doubt.”

(Stan leans his back against the wall as Cindy puts her hand against the wall and looks at him.)

CINDY

“So… how are you doing with all of this?”

STAN

“Well… I just watched my best friend hauled off to the hospital after slitting his wrist over a girl who probably didn’t give a damn about him.”

CINDY

“She loves him.”

STAN

“You met her what… once? How can you make a judgment call like that?”

CINDY

“Well, I’m a pretty good judge of character… I like you don’t I. Besides… I don’t think that she would have stuck around to talk with him if she didn’t care for him.

STAN

“Yeah… I guess.”

(Stan still leaning on the wall looks away from Cindy for a moment and then back at her.)

STAN

“Wait… did you say you liked me?”

CINDY

“Maybe.”

(Stan smiles.)

STAN

“So… I’ve been meaning to ask you how you felt about your first night.”

CINDY

“Well… I found it a bit boring.”

STAN

“Wait till the holidays.”

SCENE 32

Psychiatrist’s office

(Paul sits silently for a moment, looking down at his shoes… then he looks back up and begins speaking again.)

PAUL

“I don’t know when  or why I fell in love with her. It could have been the first time I met her. It might have been the moment I decided I was going to make her mine. It could have been one of a million moments we spent together. All I know is that I love her… whether she likes it or not… I love her.”

(Paul shifts a little and continues.)

PAUL

“I went back to work recently… that was quite an experience. Truthfully though… I thought about quitting and getting another job, but it’s hard to get a new job when they call to check your references and they find that you’re most recent accomplishment was a failed suicide attempt.”

(Paul takes a second and lowers his head and grins slightly.)

PAUL

“I wasn’t alone for more than a minute or two. People would walk past the aisle, stop and talk with me… they were eyeballing me all night. I finally had to assure them that I wouldn’t try to kill myself again… at least not there. A guy can’t kill himself in peace in a place like that… in the end though one good thing came of all of this… Cindy and I have become really close friends. Stan and her are an item now too… I won’t lie. I’m jealous of their relationship. It isn’t hard to see that it’s one that will last.”

(Paul is cut short by a bell signaling the end of the session.)

PAUL

“All I know is that I can’t end this session with a smile and a joke. This isn’t the movies. This is real life… and in real life I know that somewhere out there is a guy holding the woman I love…. And I can’t help but think that he is the luckiest guy in the world.”
